Virginia Newhart must like his sense of humor too because she has been married to him for over fifty years The Newharts are another example of a happy comedian's marriage, along with their best friends Don and Barbara Rickles. Barbara and Ginnie were friends before they met their husbands and the two couples often vacation together.
Bob Newhart didn't start out to be a comedian He was born in Illinois in 1929 and was an accountant until he was 30. At the beginning, comedy was a diversion for him, rather than a future career.
Virginia Quinn was born in 1940, the daughter of actor Bill Quinn. and she and Bob have been married since 1963. They were introduced by another friend in comedy Buddy Hackett who set them up on a blind date. Ginnie at the time babysat for Buddy Hackett's children.
She apparently had a few reservations when he proposed as she had decided early on not to marry someone in the entertainment world. She said in an interview, "Bob was always so sure, but when I walked down the aisle at St. Victor’s Church I was so nervous that my veil was shaking. My father whispered, ‘Sweetheart, I can still get you out of this.’ But I’ve never regretted our marriage one minute"
Bob had no doubts at all “I wish I had married Ginnie earlier because I would have liked to have shared that time with her."
They have four children as well as grandchildren.
Asked in an interview why she thought their marriage endured Ginnie said " I don’t know whether it’s our generation – divorce was just not in our vocabulary. Like anybody we had fights, and we had some pretty good ones. But I was never happy being apart from him, and he was never happy being apart from me. When we both cooled down I’d say, ‘I’m miserable,’ and he’d say, ‘I’m miserable. OK, let’s end this.’
Whatever the reason, they set an example the rest of us can aim for, maybe with the help of a few laughs.
