Some like to relax with friends and a drink after work, to block out the daily grind. Others like to escape with a weekend at the lake cottage or a trip to the casino.
A trip to the spa can be relaxing, although on my last couple of day trips to a spa, I must admit I spent too much of my quiet time there plotting my latest mystery, Murder At The Island Spa. It took away a little of the relaxing element of my rain forest and tropical pool treatments. However, murder in your head is not as scary as murder on the screen.
My first line of defense to combat stress is, and always has been, reading. Whether a mystery, romance, adventure or biography, it's the one way I can totally block out the outside world and allow my blood pressure to edge downwards. I find watching a movie or a television show only takes one part of my brain, leaving the other part to wander back to the pressures of everyday life. Reading takes effort, a participation on the part of the reader, unlike the passive pleasure of a movie.
So join me-lean back in the recliner, grab a book, maybe even one of mine, and lose yourself in another world.
