I created the prairie town of Timber (borrowing the physical make-up from small towns I know) for my romance novellas, which take place in the late forties, and also one that takes place in the same fictional town for circa 1900. It’s so easy to imagine these people marrying, having families, and perhaps having relatives popping up generations later as characters in a contemporary story.
Now I’ve just finished a cozy mystery and plan to write two more in a series. These also take place in Timber but in the present time.
So far, I haven’t crossed any people who feature in both sets of stories. It seems natural that my present day families may have ties with the ones from fifty years and a century ago, but I haven’t run into any conflict that I know of.
I wonder if anyone else has settled on a fictional town that seems to work so well for one genre that they use it in another. If so, have you run into any problems/conflicts?
