Liam Neeson, born in 1952,was an Irish actor who worked his way through theatre in Belfast, Dublin and London before moving into film. He starred in the Academy Award winning Schindler's List and was awarded an OBE in 1999.
Natasha Richardson was born in 1963 into a great English acting family, the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave. She began acting at the age of four as an extra in one of her father's films and went on to act in both stage and film.
Liam and Natasha starred together in Anna Christie on Broadway. Liam said he fell in love with her at first sight. "I'd never had that kind of explosive chemistry situation. She and I were like Astaire and Rogers."
They married in 1994 and had two sons,
In 2009 Liam was filming in Toronto and Natasha went to Mont Tremblant to ski. She took a fall on a beginner slope. She blacked out and an ambulance was called. She felt fine in a few minutes and refused the medical help, contacting her husband to say " "Oh darling, I've taken a tumble in the snow." Shortly afterwards she was rushed to the hospital in Montreal with a epidural hematoma.
Liam flew to her bedside but she was already brain dead. They had made a pact at the time of their marriage that if either of them were ever to be in a vegetative state, the other would promise to remove all artificial life preservation. He waited till her family and friends had time to say goodbye and she was taken off life support. The lights on Broadway were dimmed in her honour. Her organs were donated to three people in need.
Five years later in an interview Liam said, "Her death was never real. It still kind of isn't..I hear that door opening, I still think I'm going to hear her....The grief hits you. It's like a wall. You just get this profound feeling of instability."
He said his dying wish is to see his beloved wife Natasha waiting for him "at the gates of heaven with a bottle of Pinot Noir."
Liam has not remarried.
