Is it only me, or is Google becoming very annoying? It's like back in school there was always one student who was constantly jumping ahead of everyone and, before the teacher had finished the question, was throwing up their arm shouting, "I know, I know." It didn't make things better that they were usually right.
It's the same with Google. Yesterday I was trying to discover some information about the WWI battle of Passchendaele, one of the most horrific battles Canada was involved in.
I began to enter into Google "Pa..." Google jumped right in, arm held high, "I know, I know. You want PayPal— or maybe Payless Shoes."
"No Google. Please let me finish. I typed some more. "Pass..."
"Oh, Oh, I 've got it. You want Passport."
"No!! Be quiet Google. Let me finish. Passhendaele. There! Now I'm done."
"Did you mean Passchendaele?"
"Yes Google Know-It-all. I meant Passchendaele." By now I'd forgotten what the question was I had about the battle and gave up.
Sometimes I miss the old days with good old Encyclopedia Britannica. I had a lovely twenty four volume set with a whole book dedicated to the Index. The combined knowledge of the world was summed up in those twenty-four (later to be increased in number) books. You could look up a special request in the index, or just browse, filling your head with wonder.
And the best part of all? Britannia didn't even talk back.
